It’s official: A Star Is Born costars Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga will perform the Oscar-nominated song “Shallow” at the 91st Academy Awards.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences tweeted the news Friday, writing simply: “Cooper. Gaga. ‘Shallow.’ #Oscars.”
The move was widely expected, and means that four of the five nominees for Best Original Song have now been confirmed for performances during the ceremony: “Shallow”; “I’ll Fight,” from RBG; “The Place Where Lost Things Go,” from Mary Poppins Returns; and “When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings,” from The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.
A performance of the final nominated song, Black Panther’s “All the Stars,” would seem all but assured at this point.
The question of which Best Original Song nominees would be performed this year was raised by a recent Variety report indicating that only the high-profile tracks “Shallow” and “All the Stars” might make the cut. The Academy said at the time that no decision on song performances had been made, but the report sparked controversy nevertheless.
On Thursday, the organization announced that “I’ll Fight” and “The Place Where Lost Things Go” would indeed get performance time. “When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings” was added to the mix earlier Friday.
Gaga and Cooper previously said they were game to perform at the Oscars. “We talked about that actually, because I’m such a maniac,” Cooper told Variety last year. “I started texting [Gaga] the whole pitch of how we should do it. So we’ll see. There might be a cool, unorthodox way we could perform it.”
“Shallow” features music and lyrics by Gaga, Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando, and Andrew Wyatt.
The Oscars will be held Feb. 24.
