Sonic The Hedgehog Delayed Until 2020 | News | Movies – Empire

Sonic The Hedgehog

Here’s one we’d file in the Not Surprising In The Slightest folder. Following the outcry about the look of the title character in the first full trailer (which you can watch here), word arrives that the film itself will be delayed to allow for changes to Sonic The Hedgehog.

Hitting Twitter to announce the news, director Jeff Fowler at least saw the funny side, adding “#novfxartistswereharmedinthemakingofthismovie”.

It was Fowler who had previously gone online to address the criticisms of the movie, originally scheduled for November in the States (and December here), with complaints about Sonic’s weird style kicking off even as the poster dropped. “Thank you for the support. And the criticism,” Fowler wrote. “The message is loud and clear… You aren’t happy with the design & you want changes. It’s going to happen. Everyone at Paramount & Sega are fully committed to making this character the BEST he can be…” So… less of the strange human teeth?

Sonic The Hedgehog will now speed into US cinemas on 14 February next year (does it seem like the ideal date movie? Perhaps now it will be!) and has yet to confirm a shifted UK date. Will this affect its earning power? The real test for that will come via the next trailer…
