Rumored Free-to-Play Titanfall Battle Royale Could Be Out as Soon as Monday – IGN

The rumored Apex Legends reportedly won’t feature Titans.

Rumors suggest that a free-to-play, hero battle royale spinoff of Titanfall called Apex Legends is in the works at Respawn, and that it could be announced and released as soon as Monday, February 4.

First reported by YouTuber The Quartering before further details were shared by esports consultant Rod Breslau on Twitter, Breslau said that Apex Legends would be coming to PC, PS4 and Xbox One. The rumored game will allegedly feature “classes/heroes with unique abilities, maximum of 60 players per server, maximum of 3 players per team (trios) to complement each other.”

He goes on to say this this spinoff won’t actually feature any Titan mechs, and that like the first two Titanfall games, it will run on a modified version of Valve’s Source engine. He also claims micro-transactions and loot boxes for cosmetic items and in-game content will be executed similarly to how they’re done in Overwatch.

Sources who have played and have knowledge of the game confirm to me that Respawn is set to announce and release Apex Legends on Monday Feb 4, a free to play Titanfall Hero Battle Royale game for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

Kotaku claims it has heard similar reports from its own sources, who say that it “plays like Titanfall mixed with Overwatch and Blackout from Call of Duty: Black Ops 4.” Allegedly, EA held an event to show off the game this week for streamers and YouTubers.

Kotaku’s Jason Schreier goes on to suggest that Respawn had been working on Titanfall 3, but because the game also ran on the modified Source engine, it was quickly beginning to look dated by today’s standards. He suggests the studio may have decided to switch engines for Titanfall 3, and is releasing the alleged Apex Legends as a “stopgap” due to development on Titanfall 3 being delayed as a result.

Additionally, games industry insider Nibel revealed on Twitter that he discovered the URL PlayApex.com redirects to EA’s homepage, and that EA trademarked Apex Legends and Project Apex in 2018.

Of course, all of this is still heavily rumored and should be taken with a grain of salt. If the rumors do prove to be true, it looks like we will know by Monday.

In October 2018, reports suggested that Respawn would release Titanfall 3 and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order by late 2019. Respawn was acquired by EA in 2017, and at the time both groups revealed that the studio was working on several projects, including an Oculus Rift VR game that was announced in 2017, a third Titanfall game and a third-person Star Wars title that was revealed to be Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order at E3 2018.
