Next-Generation Ford Mustang Could Already Be Controversial – CarBuzz

The all-new 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E is obviously a big deal in and of itself, but it also provides a very clear preview of what could happen next for the Blue Oval’s iconic pony car. Earlier this month, the Mach E’s chief engineer, Ron Heiser, more or less confirmed that, eventually, an all-electric Mustang will happen. No exact timeline has been provided, though Ford product planners probably have a pretty good idea when it will happen. Expect a Mustang hybrid or plug-in hybrid to happen first. But what’s already happened is the Mustang Lithium EV Prototype, which debuted last November at SEMA. It was built by Ford to provide an early preview of the Mustang’s battery-electric future.

Will this be controversial? Absolutely, but, then again, it ensures the Mustang’s long-term survival as government-imposed emissions standards become even more stringent. Going all-electric is a clear answer. And thanks to the folks at Mach E Club we have a decent idea of what a Mustang EV could look like with some new rendered images.

Utilizing the Mach E’s styling language, such as a new front fascia with an open grille and two side air intakes, lower lip spoiler with wings to match the side skirts, a new and more aggressive hood, Shelby-like fender vents, and a rear-end inspired by the SUV, these rendered images have been created. Quite obviously, the current generation Mustang GT Coupe was used as a starting point.

The applied Mach-E design bits actually look pretty good, especially at the rear end. Aside from the very much acceptable potential styling direction, a Mustang EV will also be quite the performer based on what the Mach-E can do.

For example, the Mach-E Performance Edition offers 459 hp and 612 lb-ft of torque and a 0-60 time of 3.5 seconds. Imagine what a few more years of technology advancements combined with a lighter coupe will produce.

In other words, a Mustang EV could easily achieve that 60 mph sprint time in less than 3.5 seconds and exceed 500 hp and 600 lb-ft – before any Shelby variants arrive. Regardless of where one stands on the issue of electric vehicles, what can’t be argued is their performance capabilities. Along with a low center of gravity thanks to a floor-mounted battery pack, a Mustang EV is also primed to be a serious track car as well.
