The Voice recap: Another contestant is sent packing

Welp, the comeback kid has come and gone.

There was a minute there when it looked and sounded like Lynnea Moorer might just be able to establish something solid after being absent from the on-air blinds and knockouts — at the time, she was instead competing on the digital form competition with Kelsea Ballerini as the coach/judge — but for the last few performances, she’s been on seriously shaky ground.

That’s especially true tonight on The Voice, and it costs her big time.

Amid a wonky performance by Blake Shelton’s team and a cascade of never-ending runs by Jennifer Hudson’s squad, the contestants revealed to have been voted through by America are (“in no particular order,” as Carson Daly reminds us):

1. Kennedy Holmes (Team Jennifer)
2. Kymberli Joye (Team Kelly)
3. Reagan Strange (Team Adam)
4. Chris Kroeze (Team Blake)
5. Kirk Jay (Team Blake)
6. MaKenzie Thomas (Team Jennifer)
7. Sarah Grace (Team Kelly)
8. Dave Fenley (Team Blake)
9. Chevel Shepherd (Team Kelly)

That leaves Lynnea and DeAndre Nico to vie for the save-me vote with performances of “Tattooed Heart” and “Take Me to the King,” respectively.

Both deliveries are pretty overwrought, but DeAndre has the edge on consistency. Just like last night, Lynnea’s showcase runs the gamut of her vocal abilities and never quite settles on a style that she can stick to. DeAndre’s is nowhere near as impressive as it needs to be if he wants to make it much further himself — even coach Adam Levine seems to know this, as he pleads with fans for another chance to get him into ship shape — but there’s a lot more passion and power behind his execution, and it’s no question that he’s earned this win tonight.

It’s kinda cruel to watch Lynnea go home, though. This has been a pretty drawn-out process for her, what with being sent home from the blind auditions, then put on the chopping block last week as well. Maybe this decision is a moment of mercy for her, in the end.

In other news, we’re now starting to inch towards the home stretch, everybody. Next week, the Top 10 will perform for a spot in the semifinals (with two going home Tuesday), and then four will be chosen for the big finale.

TEAM STANDINGS:
Adam Levine – DeAndre Nico, Reagan Strange.
Blake Shelton – Kirk Jay, Chris Kroeze, Dave Fenley.
Kelly Clarkson – Chevel Shepherd, Sarah Grace, Kymberli Joye.
