Ariana Grande performs at Billboard Women In Music 2018 on Dec. 6, 2018 in New York City.
Ariana Grande has had a tough year to say the least. Masked by record-breaking chart toppers and award nominations, Grande delivered her fifth studio album, thank u, next, on Friday (Feb. 8) through battles of heartbreak and anxiety. While her Sweetener album, released less than a year prior, primarily followed the themes of love and prosperity, the 12-track record is an ode to the ups and downs of moving on after darkness.
Not all the songs are sad, though. Many of the tunes, such as singles “thank u, next” and “7 Rings” bask in the post-break up sense of empowerment, self-love and spending time with friends. However, as the songstress parted ways with fiance Pete Davidson and grieved over the death of ex-boyfriend Mac Miller in just a matter of months, a large portion of the album sheds light on those anxiety-ridden days where you think about what could have been. Here are the most heartbreaking lyrics on thank u, next.
“Ghostin”
I know you hear me when I cry
I try to hold it in the night
When you’re sleeping next to me
But its your arms that I need this time
Look at the cards that we’ve been dealt
If you were anybody else
Probably wouldn’t last a day
Every tear’s a rain parade from hell
Baby you do it so well
“In My Head”
My imagination’s too creative
They see demon, I see angel
Angel, angel
Without a halo
Wingless angel
Falling, falling, but I never thought you’d leave me
Falling, falling, needed something to believe in
Oh, I thought you were the one
“Bloodline”
No we won’t be talkin’ the next day
I ain’t got nothin’ to say
I ain’t lookin’ for my one true love
Yeah that ship sailed away
“Fake Smile”
I read the things the write about me
Hear what they saying on the TV
It’s crazy
It’s getting hard for them to shock me
But every now and then it’s shocking
Don’t blame me
I know it’s the life that I chose
But baby I’m grateful I want you to know
I’m happy for the love and all the above
If I’m being honest I done been through way too much
“Imagine”
Imagine a world like that
Imagine a world like that
We could lie until I’m sleep on your chest
Love how my face fits so good in your neck
Why can’t you
Imagine a world like that
Imagine a world
