Now Playing: Captain Marvel Trailer Breakdown!
Captain Marvel‘s release date is just a couple weeks away, coming to theaters on March 8. With that day fast approaching, the studio has started to screen the film for critics. That means we’re seeing the very first impressions rolling in via social media, and they’re by-and-large very positive. Even Goose the Cat has attracted a fanbase.
This film takes place in the 1990s, and introduces a brand new hero to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Captain Marvel is one of the most powerful characters in Marvel comic continuity. Following the disastrous events of Avengers: Infinity War, Nick Fury sent out an emergency distress call to her just before he faded into dust. This prequel explains just how Fury came to know Captain Marvel, and more importantly, why she’s his trump card.
The reactions on Twitter are glowing, praising its fresh approach and sense of humor. Aside from that consensus, some critics shared more specific reactions. Collider EIC Steven Weintraub remarked on how far Marvel’s de-aging tech has become.
“The de-aging technology being used has become so seamless that I forgot it was being used,” Weintraub said. “We are on the precipice of something both exciting and scary. Can only imagine what Scorsese will do with it in ‘The Irishman’.”
Check below for a roundup of reactions. Captain Marvel releases on March 8.
#CaptainMarvel has a great ‘90s sci-fi vibe w/ a tone unlike any other Marvel movie, really. It’s retro & trippy, mysterious & dorky. It’s funny in surprising places & badass in all the right places. It remains entertaining because it’s always changing. It’s got the right stuff pic.twitter.com/o7AvqYY63x

#CaptainMarvel is a great origin story. Brie’s buddy cop chemistry with @SamuelLJackson is so much fun and her relationship with Lashana Lynch is the real heart of it. Ben Mendelsohn and the cat both steal the show.

Captain Marvel is everything that I hoped it would be. It feels completely unlike any other Marvel film. A unique and fresh take on an origin story that feels new. Brie Larson is fantastic as Carol Danvers. This is one of my favorite Marvel movies of all time. #CaptainMarvel pic.twitter.com/0ou7HU93MY

CAPTAIN MARVEL isn’t what I expected based on marketing. It’s pretty much an “all in” cosmic space movie. Also, it’s a lot weirder than I expected. Ben Mendelsohn is awesome as Talos.

And not wacky weird like the GOTG movies. Think more “Rey snapping into endless mirrors” from The Last Jedi type scenes. Also, finally, the MCU and a Nirvana song come together (as Kurt Cobain wanted)

Captain Marvel is an effective Avengers prequel in some ways akin to the 1st Captain America movie. It’s pro-woman without being overdone with pre and post credit scenes that made me tear up and gave me goosebumps respectively pic.twitter.com/or2Oj7CdRV
