The reality show’s longtime host tweeted Monday that he’s been dropped as host. “Just informed @DancingABC will be continuing without me. It’s been an incredible 15 year run and the most unexpected gift of my career. I’m grateful for that and for the lifelong friendships made. That said, now what am I supposed to do with all of these glitter masks?”
ABC not only confirmed his departure but said Bergeron’s co-host Erin Andrews is leaving, too.
“Tom Bergeron will forever be part of the Dancing with the Stars family,” according to a joint statement from ABC and BBC Studios. “As we embark on a new creative direction, he departs the show with our sincerest thanks and gratitude for his trademark wit and charm that helped make this show a success. Erin will also not be returning, and we appreciate all that she brought to the ballroom. Fans have been rooting for her since she originally competed as a contestant back in 2010, and her signature sense of humor has become a hallmark of the show.”
But why do another season without Bergeron? One source close to the show told EW, “The show needs a punch in the arm.”
Bergeron has been a fixture on the competition show since it launched June 1, 2005. He went through several co-hosts — Lisa Canning, Brooke Burke tried and Andrews, who joined in 2014 — but he, like judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Bruno Tonioli, and Len Goodman, was a mainstay in the ballroom.
Recently, Bergeron spread his wings and participated in a competing reality show on Fox. Don’t remember? He was the Taco on The Masked Singer!
