Does Queen Elizabeth Have Mixed Feelings About Meghan Markle’s Baby Shower? – The Cheat Sheet

It was headline news when Meghan Markle, wife of Prince Harry, traveled to New York City for a baby shower thrown by her friends. Photographers were around to capture every move, from Meghan’s arrival at the hotel to the delivery of the flowers. Guests were photographed as they stepped out of cars, and some of Meghan’s friends gave glimpses into the lavish suite where the baby shower was held.

Although no members of the royal family were in attendance, fans can’t help but wonder what the typically private, low-key Queen Elizabeth would have to say about Meghan’s over-the-top baby shower. Royal family members typically don’t have such events, and when they do, they are much more low-key. Did Harry’s grandmother have mixed feelings about Meghan’s baby shower?

Why was Meghan Markle’s baby shower so fancy?

Hosted by her close friend, Serena Williams, Meghan Markle’s baby shower seemed to be more of a Hollywood event that an intimate gathering with friends. The shower is rumored to have cost over $200,000, with no expense spared. Fans were lined up in the streets to catch a glimpse of the pregnant Duchess of Sussex, and the event was filled with glitz and glamour.

This is the atmosphere that a Hollywood starlet would certainly expect for a baby shower. However, across the pond in England, such gatherings are much more private, especially for a member of the royal family. Perhaps it was an opportunity for Meghan to spend quality time with her friends one last time before she enters the exciting journey of motherhood.

Who attended Meghan Markle’s baby shower?

In addition to Serena Williams, Meghan’s guests included her best friend and stylist Jessica Mulroney, Amal Clooney, and Gayle King. Other guests included some of Meghan’s former Suits co-stars, as well as her friend Taryn Toomey. Many people were surprised at the fact that sister-in-law Kate Middleton was not at the baby shower, but as it turns out, the Duchess of Cambridge was busy at home attending to her three small children.

While not every detail is known about exactly what went on at the baby shower, we do know that it was one spectacular party! In addition to a harpist, guests were treated to a cotton candy machine, amazing party favors, and decadent sweet treats prepared especially for them. An impressive display of flowers was delivered to the hotel where the shower was held and later were generously donated to charity. Queen Elizabeth most likely would have preferred that Meghan had a private, intimate gathering at Kensington Palace instead.

Why would Queen Elizabeth have mixed feelings about Meghan’s baby shower?

Many royal fans speculated Queen Elizabeth would have preferred that Meghan have a much quieter gathering that was not so high-profile. Queen Elizabeth herself did not make a statement regarding her feelings about the shower, but typically, it’s well-known that baby showers are an American tradition that British mothers-to-be often do not take part in.

In England, if an expectant mother did choose to have a baby shower, it would be a small and informal gathering, unlike the showers that American women prefer. It’s worth noting that Kate Middleton didn’t have a baby shower for any of her three children.

Fans feel that Meghan deserved a baby shower

Although Queen Elizabeth may have frowned upon Meghan’s high-profile baby shower, many royal fans feel the Duchess of Sussex deserved to have a party celebrating the arrival of her first child. The shower was privately paid for, and Meghan reportedly did not open any of the presents at the event, as she is taking them home so she and Harry can open them together. Perhaps Queen Elizabeth will ask Meghan to keep her private gatherings a little quieter in the future, and more in keeping with royal protocol.
