Avatar: The Last Airbender heads to Netflix in May. Here’s everything coming and going from the … [+] streaming service this month.
Happy May Day!
Actually, these days every day feels like May Day—at least in the sense that we are all shouting a collective “May day! May day!” as the entire globe spins into economic recession amidst the coronavirus pandemic. May day! May day! The planet is going down!
Distraction is key, I’ve found, to maintaining a relatively sane life in lockdown. One must social distance, wash one’s hands and all the rest, but that does not mean one must be bored. Along with some healthy exercise, a good book or twenty, and a mix of board and video games, streaming Netflix makes for a wonderful diversion.
May brings with it a number of new Netflix Originals and a bunch of other content, from movies like Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and Back to the Future, to shows like The Flash Season 6 and Riverdale Season 4.
The two shows I’m most excited about are Avatar: The Last Airbender, which drops all of its three seasons on May 15th, and Space Force which lands on May 29th.
The Last Airbender is one of my favorite animated family shows of all time, hands down. I have nothing but fond memories of watching this with my family and then moving on to The Legend Of Korra, and then even more recently the Netflix Original The Dragon Prince from the lead writer of The Last Airbender, Aaron Ehasz. If you haven’t watched these shows, please do—whether or not you have kids.
Space Force is a new Netflix Original Comedy from Steve Carell and The Office co-creator Greg Daniels. It’s about President Trump’s new military branch, Space Force, and stars Carell as its new chief. If it can capture that old Office charm, or even a fraction of it, we’re in for a treat.

Titles Leaving Netflix In May
Outbreak
Not as many titles are leaving Netflix as there are new ones arriving, which is a good thing. But there are some worth pointing out.
Outbreak (pictured above) is on its way out at the end of May. I note this because it’s a movie about a deadly virus which seems . . . timely, if you will. I saw it ages ago and liked it a lot but I’m not sure how well it’s aged. I should give it another go before it leaves Netflix.
John Carter is a much underrated space-and-planet sci-fi/fantasy movie from Disney that completely bombed at release but which I have a fond spot for. It heads to Disney Plus today.
Then there are the Austin Powers movies, the Final Destination movies, and a couple Naked Gun films all heading out at the end of the month. Here’s the full list:
