Director Pawel Pawlikowski isn’t necessarily known for happy go-lucky films: He’s directed the agonizing romance My Summer of Love, starring Emily Blunt, and Ida, a drama about a soon-to-be nun who finds out her Jewish parents were murdered during World War II.
Pawlikowski’s latest movie, Cold War — nominated for three Oscars, including Best Director — falls into what the filmmaker is best known for. The sweeping, sad, and volatile romance between a music director, Wiktor (Tomasz Kot), and a young singer, Zula (Joanna Kulig), spans a decade and shows off what Pawlikowski is great at. With Oscar nominations for Best Cinematography and Best Foreign Language Film, the black-and-white drama is being rightfully recognized for its artistry, and for destroying audience’s hearts.
