Google May Be Planning To Take On Microsoft, Sony, And Nintendo In The Lucrative Gaming Market – Forbes

major announcement coming at this year’s Game Developers Conference, or GDC, which takes place in San Francisco over the course of March 18 – 22. Invitations to a Google-sponsored event at GDC went out in mid-February, but details were scant, other than the place and time – March 19, at 10am PST.

The prevailing theory is that Google plans to announce a game streaming service and potentially a game-console like device that would take on Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo (and others) in the lucrative gaming market. If you remember, back in October, Google opened up a limited beta of its “Project Stream”, which allowed gamers to play Assassin’s Creed Odyssey right from their Chrome web browser, without the need to actually install the game; it was entirely hosted in the cloud.

A recently published patent that just came to light adds another interesting wrinkle. This patent issued to Google (Pub. No.: US 2019/0030425 A1) details plans for a game controller that can send and receive signals to and from a host device with a local processor and storage or to a network. The controller is reminiscent of those used on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, and has a similar D-Pad / Dual-Analog stick arrangement, with a microphone, and various buttons and triggers.

Renders of the Google game controller have also hit Twitter, which have sparked some spirited discussions regarding its ergonomics (the renders don’t make it look very comfortable to hold / use).

Until Google’s event takes place, this is all speculation, but quality game streaming from the cloud is already possible on Android TV devices like the NVIDIA SHIELD TV (and others) and Google could have a few tricks ups its sleeve in future updates to its own Chromecast devices. We’ll know the company’s official plans soon enough.
