There is something about Steve Rogers that is always alone. In the trailer, we hear his conversation with Peggy Carter from The Winter Soldier. “Sometimes the best we can do is start over…” Alone, maybe. But he carries her with him. And this memory may be the key to fixing things.

Into the Before

The white suits that the surviving Avengers are wearing are reminiscent of Ant-Man’s shrinking armor, and we know that the quantum realm is where one can stumble into a time vortex. Obviously, some part of the plan involves turning back the clock. Peggy was right: “Start over.”

Clearly, Tony Stark makes it safely back to Earth, since he and Nebula are both seen in the quantum armor. The trailer opens with him, the hero who started the Marvel Cinematic Universe, trapped with Nebula aboard the Benatar.

Coded Message

“I know I said no more surprises, but I was really hoping to pull off one last one.” This is Tony Stark leaving a goodbye message for Pepper Potts, but it’s really directors Joe and Anthony Russo talking to the fans.

A Tale of Two Expressions

Let’s skip around in time ourselves. The trailer is overwhelmingly melancholy, but it ends with bliss — Carol Danvers and Thor coming face to face. This is the one she shows him…

No one is a better couple than these two, however. Rocket Raccoon and War Machine are obviously soul mates.

Hawkeye Trains a Sharpshooter

Another mindblower for fans was this shot. At first glance, it would appear to be Clint Barton (a.k.a. Hawkeye) teaching his daughter his skills while the rest of the family picnics in the background. But…

Kate Bishop…?

But … the little Lila Barton we met in Age of Ultron would still be a little kid. This teenage girl could be someone else, and fans are guessing (hoping?) it is Kate Bishop, a sword-fighting, arrow-slinging warrior who was part of Marvel Comics’ Young Avengers — and later took on the mantle of “Hawkeye.”

Not Hawkeye Anymore

In Avengers: Endgame, whatever grief has befallen Clint (most likely the dusting of his family) has transformed him into the masked vigilante known as Ronin. Hawkeye is not who he is anymore.

When Scott Lang returns from the quantum realm, where he was alone and stranded at the end of Ant-Man and the Wasp, he finds what looks like missing pet posters. But these are for people who vanished in The Snap.

The Original Crew

One mystery of the trailer is “when.” We know these characters, but where in time are they? For example, sometimes Natasha is a blonde, and sometimes she’s a redhead.

Mohawk Clues

Natasha’s style changes from movie to movie, but the haircuts, including Clint’s, may be a clue that we’re not always seeing linear time in this trailer.

That also seems to be the case here. This looks a lot like Captain America in the battlefields of World War II. How far back could they go? And who might he find again in that far off time? It won’t be long until we find out on April 26.
