Duchess Meghan Markle has had enough. After more than a year of dealing with the cruelties of the British press, she is clapping back and standing up for herself. We knew that the former actress has been struggling in the limelight. In a recent ITV documentary Harry and Meghan: An African Journey — Markle discussed how unfair the press has been to her. She also feels like she’s existing rather than living.
We knew that Prince Harry filed a lawsuit against Mail on Sunday for their exploitative measures. The prince said in an October 2019 statement,
My deepest fear is history repeating itself. I’ve seen what happens when someone I love is commoditized to the point that they are no longer treated or seen as a real person. I lost my mother and now I watch my wife falling victim to the same powerful forces.
Now, Markle has come through with her very own legal papers. In them, the duchess accuses Mail on Sunday and its parent company of printing “untrue” stories about her. She believes that they did so in order to portray her “negatively.”
While many Brits are rolling their eyes at the duke and duchess, there is one mega-famous Brit that is coming to her defense.
Naomi Campbell just defended Meghan Markle with a badass quote
We all know that legendary supermodel Naomi Campbell doesn’t take any crap from anyone, which is why she’s so thrilled Markle is sticking up for herself. Campbell told The Guardian, “When I heard [she was taking legal action], I was like ‘Bravo. Good for her.”
However, the supermodel believes Markle’s situation is much more nuanced than harassment and bullying in the press. As a Black woman, Campbell has noted how much worse the British press has treated celebrities of color. She explained,
We all know what that’s about. I’ve seen how they treat Raheem Sterling, how they speak about Lewis Hamilton and Serena Williams. I don’t know how Meghan Markle deals with this and I’m really glad she’s taken action to defend herself.
Here are the lies that the British tabloids have printed about Meghan Markle
Mail on Sunday claimed that Markle’s NYC baby shower was lavish and she didn’t even invite her mother. In her legal documents, the duchess’ lawyer writes, “The baby shower (which actually cost a tiny fraction of the $300k falsely stated in the article) was organized and hosted by one of her best friends from university. The claimant’s mother was of course invited, and the claimant also offered to buy her airline tickets. However, her mother was unable to attend due to work commitments.”
The documents go on to say that that the paper printed false descriptions of Markle and Prince Harry’s Frogmore Cottage renovations and that the letter the duchess wrote to her estranged father, Thomas Markle, was printed with massive omissions.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are disconnecting from the public
With this lawsuit looming and the backlash against their documentary, the duke and duchess are stepping back and shifting their strategy. Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliam explained to Daily Star,
It was highly unwise to give interviews of this sort which, whatever their appeal to Millennials, has led to ‘concern’ being expressed for Harry and Meghan appearing ‘fragile’ by sources close to William and has led to a source close to the Sussexes talking about Harry and Meghan ‘singlehandedly modernizing the royal family. If they stay I hope they absorb the fall out from this and, during their six-week rest, plan a future where their undoubted talents are used constructively!
We just hope they find some peace.
