We recently asked members of the BuzzFeed Community, “What is the most disturbing scene to come out of nowhere in a non-horror movie?” and their responses were pure nightmare fuel. Here are just a few of the most disturbing scenes that came out of absolutely NOWHERE:

“I’ve been afraid of snakes my whole life, but one of my absolute favorite film series is Harry Potter. Still, this freaked me the heck out. Even though I knew what happened because I read the book, the basilisk scarred me for life. At 24 years old, I still have trouble watching it.”
10.
The finger scene, Black Swan (2010)

“When Nina starts to peel the skin off her fingers in the sink, thinking she’s peeling off black feathers. I watched the film once and I can’t even think of watching it again because of that scene. It just makes my insides swirl.”

“When that man hits the propeller as the ship is sinking and starts spinning before slamming into the water…that whole scene was nightmare fuel for 7-year-old me.”

“As a kid, I loved watching the 1999 version of The Mummy, but that scene when Johnathan has the scarab running around under his skin and Rick has to cut it out always made me freak out. It gave me nightmares for a month!”
13.
The R.O.U.S. scene, The Princess Bride (1987)

20th Century Fox
“The part when that guy is stuck in quicksand, and then a massive rat thing starts biting him. I watched this when I was pretty little and I was scarred.
14.

“That part when Bilbo goes all crazy over the ring in Rivendell. It came out of nowhere and I had to look away from the screen every time it came up for ages afterwards!”
15.
The ending scene, Mother! (2017)

Paramount Pictures
“The last 25 minutes of this movie goes from weird to pure chaos to WTF so quickly…and then the thing with the baby. I still haven’t been able to watch that movie a second time.”
17.
The basement scene, Zodiac (2007)

Paramount Pictures
“There is an objectively correct answer to this question. When Jake Gyllenhaal’s character Robert Graysmith is in the basement of a man’s home while investigating a possible lead, the man takes Graysmith to his basement to show him some old film posters that may have a handwriting sample that Graysmith can use in his investigation. While down there, Graysmith thinks he hears footsteps on the floor above them, and asks the man if they are indeed alone, as the man had assured him they were when he arrived.
It is a scene that is reminiscent of any number of high-tension horror scenes, masterfully done in a film that was absolutely robbed during awards season that year.”
18.
The bear scene, Annihilation (2018)

Paramount Pictures
“The mutant bear scene in this movie gave me so much anxiety. Maybe because bears scare me to begin with, but the exposed skull and the sounds that came from that thing are nightmare-inducing.”
19.
And finally…the OTHER bear scene, The Revenant (2015)

20th Century Fox
“Seriously, I did not see that coming and it’s still like the most graphic scene I have ever seen in a movie.”
