Around June or July every summer, people start asking, “Hey,
when’s Shark Week?” Discovery Channel unleashes its popular ocean beast series
on Sunday, July 28, and the network is upping the ante with a feature film this
year.
Shark Week has always been a huge draw with its educational, adventurous, edge-of-your-seat programming that engages viewers of all ages. It seems like everyone likes to get in on Shark Week fun, and you can find shark-themed Dairy Queen snacks, shark-themed cruises, and in the past, Sharknado movies. People love it. To keep things fresh, Discovery Channel recruited Josh Duhamel for its scripted film, Capsized: Blood in the Water. Who’s excited?

The film is based on a true story
Blood in the Water is a frightening tale of survival that’s
rooted in real-life events. A yacht trip to Florida turned deadly for one group
of friends and the boat’s captain when stormy waters cause the boat to capsize.
Discovery
Channel’s description of the film reads:
“Based on the harrowing true story of an October 1982 shark encounter. After a yacht bound for Florida capsizes during an unexpected storm, its crew is left to drift for days in the chilling waters of the Atlantic where they become prey to a group of tiger sharks. With the hope of rescue dwindling, the crew must do everything in their power to survive as the sharks continue to hunt them.”
Though it hasn’t been confirmed, the movie is thought to be a retelling of the story of Deborah Scaling Kiley, one of two survivors of the deadly trip. In October 1982, she set sail from Maine to Florida with four other people when a storm caused the boat to sink and stranded them on a dinghy. She told CNN two of the men fell into the shark-infested waters after drinking sea water and becoming delusional. Another woman died from a wound. Kiley never shook the trauma.
Discovery Channel once did a documentary on her story with
its I Shouldn’t Be Alive series that aired in 2005. Kiley passed away in
2012.
Premiere details for ‘Capsized: Blood in the Water’
Josh Duhamel stars in the movie along with Josh Close, Beau Garrett, Rebekah Graf, and Tyler Blackburn. If any of Duhamel’s past roles are an indication, he could wind up playing the hero or one of the heroes in this film. The movie airs on Wednesday, July 31st at 9:00 p.m. ET. Fans who sign up for the Discovery Go app will have access to cast interviews and behind the scenes footage from the movie during Shark Week.
While most of Discovery Channel’s Shark Week content is meant
to educate and thrill audiences, this film may be a bit terrifying. But that
doesn’t mean you can’t learn some survival tactics from watching it. Shark Week
runs from July 28 to August 4 and will feature 20 hours of in-depth content,
including this feature film which is the first of its kind for the network. Don’t
forget to tune in to see Duhamel go face-to-snout with a shark this summer.
