Spike Lee marked what would’ve been Michael Jackson‘s 62nd birthday on Saturday (Aug. 29) by sharing a fresh take on his music videos for the late King of Pop’s “They Don’t Care About Us.”

For the updated visual, titled “They Don’t Care About Us (2020),” the iconic film director combined scenes from his two previous videos for the 1995 protest song — one featuring Jackson in the streets of Brazil and another prison-set clip examining police brutality — with new footage from Black Lives Matter protests in the U.S. and other parts of the globe.

“Great protest songs can’t get old, stale or non-relevant because the struggle still continues,” Lee said in a statement. “That’s why THEY DON’T REALLY CARE ABOUT US is the anthem during this chaotic, pandemic world we are living in.”

“They Don’t Care About Us” was featured on Jackson’s ninth album, History: Past, Present and Future, Book I. The single reached No. 10 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, and No. 30 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100.

The release of “They Don’t Care About Us (2020)” coincided with Lee’s annual Brooklyn Loves Michael Jackson block party on Saturday, which took place virtually this year as a result of the ongoing pandemic.
