It’s Thursday, which means it’s time once again for The Monitor, WIRED’s look at all the news coming out of the world of pop culture. What’s hot today? Well, Chris Hemsworth is set to play Hulk Hogan, The Wandering Earth is coming to Netflix, and Idris Elba is set to host Saturday Night Live. Pretty steamy, amirite?
Thor Will Be Playing Hulk (Hogan)
In a casting move that seems almost too perfect, Chris Hemsworth (a.k.a. Marvel’s Thor, the Incredible Hulk’s friend from work) is reportedly signing on to play wrestler Hulk Hogan in an upcoming biopic. The movie will be directed by Todd Phillips and co-written by Scott Silver, the pair behind the upcoming flick The Joker. Netflix is close to a deal to release the film, which will focus on Hogan’s rise in the 1980s and the Hulkamania phenomenon. Hogan himself will serve as an executive producer. Can you dig it, brother?
Chinese Sci-Fi Hit The Wandering Earth Is Coming to Netflix
The Wandering Earth, generally considered China’s first large-scale sci-fi flick, is on its way to Netflix. The movie, based on a short story from Three-Body Problem author Liu Cixin, has made more than $610 million at the Chinese box office. “With its high-quality production and storytelling, we believe that The Wandering Earth will be loved by sci-fi fans around the world,” Jerry Zhang, Netflix’s manager of content acquisition, said in a statement. No word yet on when Netflix will offer the film.
Idris Elba Just Picked Up His First SNL Hosting Gig
Speaking of people in the Thor movies, Idris Elba—Marvel’s Heimdall, and the guy everyone wants to be the new James Bond—just set the date for his first turn as the host of Saturday Night Live. People‘s Sexiest Man Alive will take the stage in Studio 8H on March 9 and will be promoting his new Netflix film Turn Up Charlie. Said fans everywhere, “I’ll be in my bunk.”
