Masked singer Captain Marvel look in Avengers: Endgame was Brie Larson’s choice

Masked singer

Some Captain Marvel fans have expressed anger about the character’s appearance in Avengers: Endgame, saying Carol Danvers looks overly styled and made-up.

In a new interview, directors Anthony and Joe Russo say each actor is given a wide range to make their own hair and makeup choices, and Brie Larson says she may have “stumbled” in her first steps as the character.

“This was Brie’s first time playing the character,” Joe Russo told /Film at this weekend’s press junket. “She [filmed Avengers: Endgame] before she filmed Captain Marvel, and I think she was experimenting with what the character was. And those were the choices that she and her hair and makeup team had made.”

Joe Russo added: “I think as she started to gain a deeper understanding of the character, especially as she approached her own movie, she started to make different choices and as an artist she should be afforded that right to make whatever choice that she wants to make.”

In the press event for the movie, Larson confirmed that her scenes in Endgame came well before she performed in her stand-alone movie, even though that was released first.

“This film will always be personally dear to me because it is my first time playing Captain Marvel,” Larson said. “I had to stumble and try to figure out who this character was with no script for this, and no script for Captain Marvel either, and perform for the first time in front of legends.”

It’s not clear if this will ease complaints over the character’s look, or merely ignite them again.
