Veronica Mars season 4 gave Marshmallows eight new hours to revisit all their Neptune favorites. Veronica (Kristen Bell) and Keith Mars (Enrico Colantoni) were in every episode, and Logan (Jason Dohring) was in most of them, but there wasn’t room for everyone in every episode. There wasn’t room for Mac (Tina Majorino) at all, and Dick Casablancas (Ryan Hansen) was only in three.
Hansen still had time to attend Hulu’s lunch for the Television Critics Association on Friday though. Showbiz Cheat Sheet asked him why he was only in three episodes, and we also got to get his thoughts on the ending, so spoiler alert for Veronica Mars season 4.
Ryan Hansen was busy filming two movies
Veronica Mars originally had a bigger role for Dick Casablancas in season 4, but Hansen was filming the Fantasy Island movie, and the Tiffany Haddish/Rose Byrne comedy Unlimited Partners.
“I was supposed to do five episodes but I could only do three which is such a bummer but I’m so glad I got to be a part of it,” Hansen said. “The show means so much to me.”
A little Dick Casablancas went a long way in ‘Veronica Mars’ season 4
It honestly felt like Dick was in more of Veronica Mars season 4 because when he was on screen, they got a lot of mileage out of him.
“I was so thankful and I got to the opening, the movie with me and Josh Duhamel,” Hansen said. “That whole thing was so fun and so hilarious. I got to do that dance stuff at the bar. I loved all the stuff they gave Dick. I was so excited.”
Veronica Mars solved the case. Dick Casablancas will be slow to catch up.
The mystery of season 4 involved Dick’s father, Big Dick Casablancas (David Starzyk). Hansen thinks his character was oblivious to his father’s corruption.
“I don’t think he knows,” Hansen said. “I’m going to be honest, I think he’s so wrapped up in being the king of spring break and his movie career, or wannabe movie career, I don’t think he really gets how corrupt his dad is.”
At least there’s little worry that corruption runs in the Casablancas family.
“I wonder if Dick is smart enough for all that corruption,” Hansen said.
The tragedy of ‘Veronica Mars’ season 4 will hit Dick eventually
Big Dick didn’t survive his latest scandal. Plus, the bomber took out one of Dick’s close friends as collateral damage. Dick Casablancas was the fun part of Veronica Mars season 4. Next time we see him, he may be in mourning.
“If there’s a season 5 and if Dick even gets to come back, he’ll deal with the loss of his best friend, his dad, his brother,” Hansen said, but still couldn’t help joking. “Dick’s taking a beating.”
Dick Casablancas never grows up
Season 4 of Veronica Mars showed most of the Neptune gang dealing with adult issues. Keith was having a health crisis. Veronica and Logan were considering marriage. Dick hasn’t changed though.
“Yeah, it kind of seems like it,” Hansen said. “He has probably changed the least but it is so fitting to see where he’s at, like an actor and a party boy still. He just never grew up. I think he’s maybe covering up a lot of stuff.”
