The next pay-per-view (PPV) on the WWE schedule is the Royal Rumble event set to take place on Sun., Jan. 27, 2019, at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, the company’s annual beginning of the year showcase featuring its most popular gimmick match. It will crown the next number one contender to either the Raw (Universal) or SmackDown Live (World) championship for the men, and either the Raw or SmackDown women’s title for the women.
We’re still a full five weeks away from showtime, so the card is bare bones:
- Royal Rumble (Men)
Due to his victory in Mixed Match Challenge, R-Truth will enter from the number 30 position. No one else has officially declared for the match.
- Royal Rumble (Women)
Due to her victory in Mixed Match Challenge, Carmella will enter from the number 30 position. No one else has officially declared for the match.
- Brock Lesnar vs. Braun Strowman (Universal championship)
This match was made official when Strowman defeated Baron Corbin at TLC in a match designed entirely to get Corbin out of power and give Strowman some time to heal up from an elbow issue. He was always going to get this match.
Asuka vs. Becky Lynch was announced on Main Event this past week but WWE walked that back. Rumors suggest that’s because the card is being reworked and may not look like they originally planned. There aren’t any real details on what that could mean just yet, but that was the latest word.
It’s still the Royal Rumble, no matter what they do.
