Longtime fans of the hit zombie show The Walking Dead are aware that the franchise continues to expand its universe with the addition of spinoff series. Yes, the comic book story has ended, and yes, rumors swirl that The Walking Dead will be ending its run in 2022, but the zombie apocalypse will still be televised in other forms.
With The Walking Dead’s mid-season finale fresh in
everyone’s minds, audiences have a lot to mull over for now. AMC has one
spinoff on the air already and another
on the burner, but until now, fans were in the dark about the new show’s
title. On Sunday, it was finally revealed. Perfect timing, right?

And the next ‘TWD’ spinoff will be named …
Per writer/producer Scott Gimple, the new series is titled The
Walking Dead: World Beyond. Gimple shared a post on Instagram with a photo
of the script. Gimple, who’s Chief Content Officer for AMC, serves as
co-creator on the show along with Matt Negrete.
As you can see, the first episode is called “Brave,” and will undoubtedly set the tone for these new heroes. AMC first dropped news about this spinoff back in April 2019, describing it as female-focused:
“The third series in a franchise that includes the global hit series The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead will feature two young female protagonists and focus on the first generation to come-of-age in the apocalypse as we know it. Some will become heroes. Some will become villains. In the end, all of them will be changed forever, grown-up and cemented in their identities, both good and bad.”
The ‘TWD’ spinoff’s cast list has also expanded
Major cast announcements for The Walking Dead: World
Beyond were shared during the summer, naming three young actors Nicolas
Cantu (The Amazing World of Gumball), Alexa Mansour, and Hal Cumpston. It
was just confirmed that Emmy-winning actress Julia Ormand has joined the team,
and per an AMC
press release, she’s excited:
“I’m so thrilled to be
working with The Walking
Dead team — I absolutely love how they write for women in
particular; a lovely, talented cast and great to be back with AMC.”
SyFy Wire notes that Ormond’s character Elizabeth is described as “the charismatic leader of a large, sophisticated and formidable force.” According to the media release, other stars in the cast include:
“Natalie Gold (Succession, The Land of Steady Habits) as Lyla, a mysterious figure operating in the shadows on behalf of the cause she believes in; Al Calderon (Step Up: High Water) as Barca; Scott Adsit (Veep, 30 Rock) as Tony; and Ted Sutherland (Fear Street, Rise) as Percy.”
When will the ‘TWD’ spinoff air?
The show already began production during the summer in Richmond, Virginia and is set to premiere sometime in spring 2020. It’s said that this outing of The Walking Dead will somehow connect to Rick Grimes and what happened to him after he disappeared.
If you need to catch up on the series before jumping into this spinoff, stream it on a platform like Netflix, AMC, YouTube, or Amazon Prime Video.
