A live action Hot Wheels movie is in development by Warner Bros. and Mattel, according to Variety. This is the second project under Mattel’s recently-created Mattel Films division, preceded by the Barbie film starring Margot Robbie.
“We are excited to bring the thrill of a Hot Wheels live-action feature film to the big screen in partnership with Warner Bros. Pictures,” said Mattel’s chairman/CEO Ynon Kreiz. “Mattel Films has great momentum as it continues to execute on our commitment to bring global audiences new ways to experience the brands they love as we transform Mattel into an IP-driven, high-performing toy company.”
Hot Wheels has sold more than six billion individual cars since its inception in 1968, with over 500 million sold in the past year. In 1970, DC published a licensed Hot Wheels title – written by Joe Gill and drawn by Alex Toth.
A live action Hot Wheels movie was recently in development at Legendary with Justin Lin attached, but the rights expired and returned to Mattel.
