Fortnite’s big season-ending ‘The Device’ live event is about to go down. Here’s what you need to … [+] know.
Finally, at long last, the end to of Fortnite Chapter 2, Season 2 draws nigh. It’s been a good season at least in terms of the very cool spy theme and Battle Pass. But it’s time for something new—especially because “something new” hasn’t really been occurring throughout the season.
The game has felt a little stagnant for a while now, with Epic Games not releasing as many new weapons, items or game modes. I’ve still enjoyed this season a lot, especially the fun side-story about the war between the Garden Gnomes and Teddy Bears and the fun secret challenges that entailed.
I’ve also enjoyed the AI Henchman and Bosses and hope that this kind of PvE content—in some form or another—remains in future seasons.
In any case, the big Doomsday Device event is about to kick off. The Device live event will only happen once and it’s probably going to be pretty impressive. With a few exceptions, these big season-ending events are really cool. Before Epic started having them, it was kind of unheard of in gaming. Now we have Bungie popping off their own big live events in Destiny 2.
The Device event will go live in-game at 11 am PT / 2 pm ET on Monday the 15th of June. That’s tomorrow!
If you plan on joining a match, Epic suggests that you show up at least a half hour before the event goes live. This is because servers often do fill up during these things and then you’ll just be stuck in the queue.
Alternatively, you can watch on a streamers’s YouTube or Twitch channel. I often recommend NickEh30 because he’s a family-friendly choice for you and your kids to watch.
So what should we expect from the event? There’s nothing certain, of course, but I suspect something large will explode and the map will change in some very big ways.
We’ve seen the titular Device in Midas’s room in the HQ. It’s a giant orb of sorts, with various power lines running to it through HQ. In the image at the top of this post you can see it lighting up with electricity.
It seems likely that the Device will go off and blow up the Agency. After all, the hatches outside of the Agency have been opening up. This is clearly related to whatever Midas is planning. Posting up with a good view of the Agency seems like a good idea for anyone wanting a good view of the event, though as with past events it could take place across the entire map.
Granted, there will almost certainly be more to it than this, but people are expecting an explosion. After that, it’s anyone’s guess, but betting money is on the map flooding, and many different points across the map being destroyed in the flood.
Signs for the No Sweat Insurance Company (formerly the last-standing building in Tilted Towers, now located in Lazy Lake) have popped up across the map. It’s possible that those locations are safe from the flood—or it’s possible they’ll be the locations that are destroyed. It’s possible the entire thing is just a head-fake and that the No Sweat Insurance Company plays the role of decoy only.
Season 3 Teasers
Teasers for Season 3 have shown sharks and houses floating and other aquatic-themed imagery, and there’s a rumor that Aquaman could be the special Season 3 skin, much like Deadpool was this season. I’m a little surprised at this concept given how Season 1 was already so water-themed, even its umbrella was watery. Perhaps all of these clues are red herrings, and we’re not getting a water-themed Season 3 at all.
Maybe Tilted Towers will come back!
Whatever happens, don’t forget to login to the game around 10:30 am PT / 1:30 pm ET so you don’t miss out. There will likely be a special LTM for the event as well, which should go live just before the event begins.
Season 2 ends Tuesday the 16th and Season 3 kicks off the next day.
