Crackdown 3, Jump Force, Super Smash Bros. amiibo, and much more.
If there’s one thing I love, it’s Kingdom Hearts. If there’s a second thing I love, it’s keeping track of weird phenomenon in pop culture release date scheduling. Luckily for me, 2019 has already proven itself to be a surprisingly packed time during a normally quite period of the year — February.
While Sony has used February expertly for hits like Horizon Zero Dawn and Shadow of the Colossus, it’s a normally quiet month in pop culture. Until 2019, specifically on February 15.
With the announcement that Metro Exodus will now be released on that date, Feb. 15 can now account for FIVE major game releases, an intriguing Netflix comic book adaptation, and three genre films that will keep us all busy post-Valentine’s Day. So let’s break down what’s happening that day:
Crackdown 3
Coming to: Windows, Xbox One
When we last saw it: Terry Crews featured in a Crackdown 3 trailer that debuted during The Game Awards 2018, while IGN had a chance to finally go hands-on with the cloud-powered multiplayer Crackdown has been promising for quite a while.
This release is a long time coming, as we first heard about Crackdown coming to Xbox One at E3 2014.
Dead or Alive 6
Coming to: PS4, Windows, Xbox One
When we last saw it: IGN exclusively revealed Dead or Alive 6 ahead of E3 2018, but we’ve seen a steady stream of gameplay and character reveals since then, including the Lightning Technomancer, as well as Honoka vs. Marie Rose gameplay earlier this fall.
Far Cry New Dawn
Coming to: PS4, Windows, Xbox One
When we last saw it: IGN exclusively revealed six minutes of new gameplay from Far Cry New Dawn, a standalone sequel to Far Cry 5.
Ubisoft only officially revealed New Dawn during The Game Awards 2018 earlier this month, alongside which IGN had a preview of the upcoming expansion to the Far Cry universe.
Players will be a survivor of nuclear disaster in Hope County, Montana who has to contend with the scavenger group the Highwaymen.
Jump Force
Coming to: PS4, Windows, Xbox One
When we last saw it: Numerous character reveal trailers have debuted since Jump Force’s reveal earlier this year, including most recently the Kenshin trailer.
Jump Force will bring together various franchises to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Weekly Jump Magazine, including Dragon Ball, One Piece, Naruto, Yu-Gi-Oh, and other series.
Metro Exodus
Coming to: PS4, Windows, Xbox One
When we last saw it: 4A Games and publisher Deep Silver have confirmed Metro Exodus will now release a week earlier than its planned Feb. 22 release, after having announced the game has gone gold.
4A Games first revealed Metro Exodus in 2017 after teasing a new entry in the series back in 2016.
Three Super Smash Bros. Amiibo
Nintendo is keeping the support of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate steady into the new year, with not just the release of new DLC fighters but also new amiibo for the fighting game.
The three amiibo set to be released on Feb. 15 are Ice Climbers, as well as new fighters Piranha Plant and King K. Rool.
Also being released: Dragons Dawn of New Riders
(Technically all have Feb. 14 releases)
Alita: Battle Angel
Sin City director Robert Rodriguez is bringing his adaptation of the popular manga to life with Rosa Salazar in the titular role, along with a supporting cast including Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, and Mahershala Ali.
Happy Death Day 2U
Blumhouse’s sleeper hit of 2017 Happy Death Day is getting a sequel that, if the trailer is any indication, will take its Groundhog Day with murder premise to even crazier heights, while also possibly exploring the lore of what’s happening to protagonist Theresa Gelbman.
Also being released: Isn’t It Romantic
The Umbrella Academy
Netflix’s adaptation of Gerard Way’s comic book series stars Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, and Mary J. Blige among a larger ensemble cast. The show adapts the comic’s story and follows seven of 43 children unexpectedly born on the same day in 1989 who are adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) in order to “save the world.”
Of course, that makeshift family and Reginald’s ambitions don’t exactly go as planned.
Also being released: Proven Innocent
Stay tuned as inevitably more TV releases are confirmed — it wouldn’t be a weekend without at least five new Netflix originals — and for any release date changes.
