2020 iPhone concepts (pictured) are turning out to be far more ambitious than Apple’s actual plans.

Following up his leak of the iPhone 12 design, famously reliable tipster Steve Hemmerstoffer (aka OnLeaks) has teamed up with iGeeksBlog to reveal what may well be Apple’s biggest selling phone of the year: the long-awaited iPhone SE2 (also dubbed the iPhone 9). And, externally at least, it couldn’t be more underwhelming.
What OnLeaks’ renders show is a phone which is virtually identical to the iPhone 6, 6S, 7 and 8. That means the same 4.7-inch display surrounded by thick top and bottom bezels and a Touch ID fingerprint sensor (which is expected to make a more ambitious return on the iPhone 12), as well as a single rear camera. In fact, where the iPhone SE2 does differentiate is it’s actually slightly bigger and thicker than the last iPhone to sport this form factor:
- iPhone SE2 – 138.5 x 67.4 x 7.8mm
- iPhone 8 – 138.4 x 67.3 x 7.3 mm
01/09 Update: In another blow, reliable Korean site The Elec has revealed Apple is sourcing new “Gen-6 OLED” screen technology from LG for its 2020 iPhones but this will not make it into the iPhone SE2. The tech allows the touchscreen layer to be built directly into the display which allows it to be thinner and, potentially, more power efficient.

The Good News
Get past this, however, and things do improve. OnLeaks says the thicker chassis is expected to house a significantly larger battery to match the impressive stamina of its stablemates. The back will be frosted glass (like the iPhone 11 range) to support wireless charging and the primary camera is expected to match the primary lens of the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max.
In addition to this, the iPhone SE2 will feature Apple’s barnstorming A13 chipset which – in conjunction with the smaller, lower-resolution display – means this could actually be the fastest iPhone on the market until the iPhone 12 launches in Q3. As for its arrival, Q1 is pegged. So soon.
Apple is launching an iPhone 6 look-a-like in 2020

As such, if you can get past the antiquated looks (a budget-friendly price tag should help) there’s actually a lot to like about this new iPhone, especially for Apple fans looking for a more pocketable device. That said, it’s still disappointing to see Apple opt for a design first introduced in 2014. The iPhone X design is already 3 years old and I’m sure many would’ve preferred Apple to cut corners elsewhere, such as using the A12 chipset in the iPhone XS.
Perhaps this is where Apple’s mysterious additional budget iPhone will step up later in the year? Either way, with so many new iPhones coming in 2020, users are going to be spoilt for choice.

Apple’s 2020 ambitions know no boundaries. The company plans to release up to seven new iPhone models and, internally, they will make the biggest generational leap in years. The problem for Apple is the designs keep leaking and, having already been disappointed once, a major new iPhone design leak means we are likely to be disappointed all over again.
