Show Magikarp some love. The useless little flapping fish has been a fan favorite for years, and now Pokémon GO is honoring the thing with its very own Community Day, continuing a trend of using Niantic using Kanto originals to fill out the calendar as it presumably saves some of the more high-value Pokémon for later: I’m still waiting on that Gible. Here’s what we need to know, from date and time to special move, shiny, bonus, and the special research for the event: Making a Splash.

The Pokémon: Magikarp has long had a reputation as a useless, splashy sort of Pokémon, but for that reason it’s also been a fan favorite since at least its appearance in the original anime. It evolves into Gyarados, a reference to a Chinese myth about a carp that transforms into a dragon by swimming upstream. Gyarados is a strong raider, but it takes 400 candies to make one.

Start Date and Time: Gastly Community Day will run from 11:00 AM-5:00 PM on Saturday, August 8. Niantic extended Community Day from 3-6 hours for the COVID-19 crisis, and at this point neither the extended hours nor the crisis show many signs of abating in the near term.

The Move: Any Gyarados evolved during or up to two hours after Community Day ends will know the charged move Aqua Tail. It doesn’t seem like it’s going to move the needle huge amount, but Gyarados is already a capable water-type for raids, so it can’t hurt all that much.

Shiny: This is the real point of this community Day. Shiny Magikarp isn’t all that noteworthy: it’s a little bit more golden, and it can even be hard to tell when you’re catching it. The real prize is when you evolve the thing into a striking, glorious Red Gyarados. Red Gyarados introduced the entire concept of shinies to the series when it showed up as part of the plot back in Gen 2. Magikarp and Gyarados were also the first two shinies introduced in Pokémon GO back in 2017.

Research: The special research for the event is called “Making a Splash”, and it’s available in the store. Because trainers in New Zealand are able to figure these out long before much of the rest of the world wakes up, we’ve already got the full steps.

Credit goes to the researchers at Silph Road for these, posted by Davidoo008:

Bonus: Any Pokémon caught during Community Day will yield triple Stardust, always a useful curruncy for new players and endgame battlers alike. Pop a Star piece for a bigger bonus and watch that Stardust roll in.

That’s it! It take
