There’s A Three-Way Tie For Destiny 2’s Best Weapon Of Season Of Arrivals – Forbes

Destiny 2

Destiny 2

Bungie

I think there’s a general consensus in the Destiny 2 community that Season of Arrivals is starting off pretty strong, at least compared to Season of the Worthy.

Part of that, at least, is the new slate of weapons, and while there are still more to come (two exotics, that we know of), there are already some powerhouses emerging that I thought I would highlight here. The way I see it, it’s kind of a three-way tie between the best weapons of this season, though I do think the last one I list here may actually get nerfed because it’s just too damn good at what it does. But we’ll see.

So, what are my picks?

Witherhoard

The season pass exotic grenade launcher is a truly wild weapon. Yes, in part it’s actually bugged in a way that can sometimes wipe out entire raid bosses in a matter of seconds, but even if it didn’t do that, its DPS on big targets, its mob clearing ability and its Crucible chaos have made it a top weapon of the season. And I don’t even have the handling/auto-loading catalyst yet.

The damage over time is significant on bosses, even if it’s not in the bugged state. The pools on the ground melt absolutely any enemy that comes into it. And in Crucible, you will notice that half the floor is lava these days as everyone is using this as area control. It’s probably the most versatile weapon I’ve seen in ages in Destiny 2.

Catalyst Trinity Ghoul

So far as I can tell, only one exotic catalyst has been added this season, and it’s for one of the most underused exotics in the game from the Forsaken era, but now it’s become one of the craziest and most fun.

The catalyst for Trinity Ghoul is practically an instant drop from your first activity of the season, and once you get it, the new perk is insane.

In addition to reduce draw time, it allows you to trigger the chain lighting effect of the bow on any arc damage kill. So, if you’re holding the bow, that includes non-headshot bow kills, charged melee kill, grenade kill or super kill. With certain builds it’s easy to spam any of those frequently, meaning that your chain lightning is up all the time, and when it is, there are few better mob-clearing weapons in the entire game now. It may genuinely be the best clearing exotic now, better than Sunshot or Graviton or even activated Riskrunner, given that there’s no arc damage stipulation. It’s phenomenal and amazingly fun.

Falling Guillotine

Welp, we’ve arrived at the big boy. I said on Twitter yesterday that there was a weapon so good that I wanted to keep it a secret, but I can’t, as word is spreading about the power of this thing regardless. And it’s only a legendary, not an exotic.

This is the sword you’ll find from the season pass at rank 30, and then at rank 45 you can start farming it through focused engrams once you unlock the pulse rifle too.

I don’t know if there’s even a god roll necessarily here, though I have my usual sword Relentless Whirlwind Blade combo. Add in sword-focused mods from this season like enhanced scavenger (about 25 ammo per brick) and the Lucent Blade mod, which gives you a 35% damage boost when charged with light on sword damage, and this is a boss killing behemoth.

The key is in the heavy attack, which is a Dark Drinker-like spin that just erases champions without the need to stun them and burns down bigger bosses just as fast, especially when multiple people are using it. Add up Boss Spec, Lucent Blade and the bonus to Lucent that gives you fast heavy charge time and you will be literally unstoppable. This is the fun I’ve ever had with a sword, and last season was also fun given the changes that were made. But this thing is truly incredible and you must get one immediately.

So, will any of these be nerfed? We already know that Witherhoard’s ability to insta-kill raid bosses is being fixed at some point. I don’t think anything needs to change about Trinity Ghoul. Falling Guillotine….I am concerned about Bungie looking at too closely, and that problem will be amplified when more people start unlocking it and figuring out how insanely good it is. But we’ll see.

Enjoy all these while you can.
