A source close to the family explained that it’s nearly impossible for the résumé to be legitimate, because Loughlin and Giannulli aren’t a part of the athletic world. The specifics wouldn’t be familiar to them and wouldn’t know what any awards or accolades would be in the world of rowing. On top of all that, the source says that the handwriting doesn’t match with Loughlin’s or Giannulli’s.
“They didn’t have anything to do with it,” the source said. The handwritten part isn’t in any of their writing. They don’t even know enough about crew to know what awards are prestigious or not. They are not capable of falsifying a resume like that, because that’s not their world.”

Both Loughlin and Giannulli maintain their innocence, insisting that they were misled by Rick Singer, the man behind the scheme.
“Again, they believed that they were making legitimate donations to USC,” the first source said, “and they did not know all the behind-the-scenes machinations that were going on.”
