In the annals of job-interview mistakes, Laura MacLean of Scotland just notched herself a permanent spot. The 21-year-old knew she had an interview at 11am on Feb. 18 via Skype with the company’s University Recruitment team, explains the Scottish Sun. And yet, she opened her laptop for the interview at 11am on the 18th of January. Not because she got the month of the interview mixed up—but because she thought it was actually February. Her exchange with a tactful Microsoft employee has since gone viral, reports BuzzFeed. MacLean herself first shared it online here. At 11:15, she typed: “I haven’t received a Skype call yet for my interview? Just wondering if it’s working?” The Microsoft employee then informed her the interview was on Feb. 18. Because MacLean thought it was Feb. 18, she persisted.
“It is the 18th of February and it was scheduled for 11am,” she wrote, adding, “I am just slightly confused.” At which point, the Microsoft worker politely informed her that it was January, not February. “Possibly the biggest noob on this planet,” MacLean wrote of herself in her tweet sharing the exchange. Still, the gaffe doesn’t seem to have ended her hopes of landing a job. Microsoft caught wind of the gone-viral post, and tweeted, “Can’t wait to laugh about this on the 18th. Of February.” And a company recruitment exec tells BuzzFeed that one thing they look for in candidates is the capacity for “recognizing our mistakes.” (Read more job interviews stories.)
